Recent opinions on the Atlantic City contract effort
The Press of Atlantic City last week published a letter to the editor from a Caesars dealer and an op-ed piece from Region 9 Director Joe Aston calling on Harrah’s to come to the bargaining table to negotiate a fair deal for dealers and slot technicians at Bally’s and Caesars.
The focus of both items was the new contract between Harrah’s and Local 54, which was approved last week.
From Terry Shindel’s letter: “We all are happy for Local 54 members and all of the other casino employees who have successful contract negotiations. Congratulations. But the unanswered question: Why are we being denied the same rights? We want and need a contract, too. Why are the casinos fighting so hard to prevent us from having a contract?”
Joe Aston, in his op-ed, wrote: “UAW members in Atlantic City work side by side with members of Local 54. In fact, we believe the new agreement between Local 54 and Harrah's could be a useful framework for our own negotiations. We're ready to get to work - right now.”
